Kit List & Essentials

To make sure we actually get to the end of the rally, and back again, there are also some essential pieces of kit and equipment we require.  We could of course purchase all these things new ourselves, but in keeping with the spirit of the rally … driving a hilariously unsuitable banger across 18000 miles of the some of the most inhospitable terrain on the planet, a large proportion of which doesn’t have actual roads, we feel like bringing ‘new’ parts and equipment along would be cheating!

So, should anyone have any of the following items lying around which they would be willing to donate to us for use on the rally, this would be much appreciated.  We don’t care how used and abused it may have been, because it’s only going to get more abused!

Furthermore, upon our return from Mongolia all kit and equipment donated, as well as the car (if it survives the journey) will be auctioned off or sold to raise more money for our charities.

Car Jack x 1

The all important jack, for all those vital at the side of the road repairs!

20 Ltr Fuel (Jerry) Cans x 3

Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan apparently run mostly on LPG, which means we have to find some way of crossing about 1500 miles of desert and mountains with no guarantee that we’ll be able to fill up.  Fuel cans will be vital!

Also, petrol is a mere 12p a litre in Turkmenistan, so we want to fill up as much as we can there … not sure if you can get done for smuggling fuel, but that’ll be definitely be an interesting border crossing …

Headlight/Tail-light bulbs

Most of the route is unlit, so this really speaks for itself.  I reckon we can make do without indicators though.

Fan belt x 2

The one we have on the car already has one tear in it I can see … personally I feel it’s more sporting to not change it and see how long it lasts.

Fan Belt

Front & Rear Shock Absorbers x 1 set

There are no proper roads for thousands of miles … the terrain is very tough … I’d be amazed if we didn’t wreck at least one of these!

Nissan Micra K11 Wheel Rims x 4

For the same reason as above … if we don’t utterly wreck at least one set of wheels it’ll be a ruddy miracle!

Wheel Rim

Sump guard x 1 (or any random bit of steel sheeting you might have lying around)

Just to make sure that in our enthusiasm bombing along these mountain passes we don’t hit a rock and completely rip the engine out of the car!

That would be a bad thing …

Nissan Micra K11 Tyres x 4 (15 inch … I think)

Punctures aplenty.  I’d take my space saver, but as it’s only good for about 50 miles that probably won’t cut it.

Foot Pump x 1

Well if you change the tyre then you’re going to need to pump it up aren’t you!

Roof rack x 1

Well we’re going to need somewhere to store it all.  Nothing like making a tiny car top heavy is there.
